Putting in a Swimming Pool for Triathlon Training – Gas Lines for Pool Heater

September 6, 2012 by Laura Blodgett 1 Comment

Just when you think a project couldn’t possibly get more complicated or expensive, well, it can.  I thought we were on to the easy straightforward steps.  After all, we already have natural gas plumbed to the outer wall of the house, directly adjacent to the garage.  It only needed to go five more feet to be hooked up to the pool heater.  Then, we found out that the gas pipes for the pool heater needed to be a larger diameter than all the others.  It’s hard to know all the details to ask about ahead of time!

I made a mad scramble to move a lot of empty quart canning jars, baskets of clothing from inside our new walk-in closet, and large plastic storage containers in the furnace room, to give the plumbers room to work.  The new, wider pipe needed to start in the farthest corner of the house down in the basement, naturally.  Three rooms now have more of that modern warehouse look due to pipes running along the ceiling.  From the third room in the basement, it needed to be

  • placed up through the floor into the laundry room,
  •  into the back of a useful closet in the garage,
  • up along the garage ceiling for a few feet, and
  • then twisted into place to come out of the back brick wall of the garage

where it will be attached to an outdoor gas pool heater.  Yeah, if the economy is sluggish, it’s not our fault.
